Tried Again

Held his little finger

took the first steps

But tried again

He whistled, their signal to walk

she ran towards him

in the tiny shoes

making the squeaking noise

stumbled halfway

But tried again

Fold your hands behind your back

hunch a little, tilt a little

tried to copy his walk

no, it did not match his style

But tried again

Sunday lunch

on the table with him

went out instead,

“sorry Daadu, next Sunday”

But tried again

In a diary

in his drawer

discovered a hidden gem

read his poetry

tried to write one for him

no, not as good

but tried again

Held his hand, checked the pulse,

breathed his last

as he left her hand

called the doctor

too late

heart failed

She couldn’t try again
